Film News – O’Shea Jackson Discusses Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla was a very polarising film but that has done nothing to dampen the excitement there is for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. One of the cast members of this Godzilla sequel is O’Shea Jackson and, in an interview with Collider, he had the opportunity to discuss Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Here is what O’Shea Jackson had to say on his fandom for Godzilla prior to joining the cast for Godzilla: King of the Monsters and how it heavily influenced his decision to be a part of this movie:

Well, that’s the whole reason I got the part. Whether it’s the Hanna Barbara cartoon or that weird Ferris Bueller one, I love all Godzillas. I love Godzilla.”

I got the call right after Straight Outta Compton, and I was like I have to. Certain things you feel destined for. And Godzilla’s only happening because of the little kid version of O’Shea. Before Straight Outta Compton I was asked to list my five heroes, and Godzilla was one of them. Reporters constantly ask to list my five heroes and Godzilla’s one of them.”

So I’m loving it. I got to touch his skin the other day. It was a pretty big moment for me. So that’s as close as I’ll ever get. So it’s been fun. Taking pictures of the set – I mean, legally taking pictures of the set, and just having a ball on the biggest monster pay-per-view ever.”

O’Shea Jackson also gave his opinion on what, at the time of the interview, he believed was the coolest scene in the film:

Just to speak as a Godzilla fan for a minute, there’s no way in the world Ghidorah is supposed to be in the second movie, and I’m in it? I’m losing my mind, like anytime Ghidorah gets mentioned, I’m like, ‘No way. No way! He’s going down. He’s not going up’.”

Film News – Keanu Reeves On John Wick 3

Keanu Reeves has had a resurgence as an action movie star thanks to his role as John Wick in the John Wick film franchise. The third film in this series is going to be released this year and, in an interview with a small group of journalists, Keanu Reeves had the chance to discuss John Wick 3.

John Wick 3

Keanu Reeves had this to say on how the skills he has learnt playing the part of John Wick have helped him in acting and real life:

It’s been really fun to be on a street and be in a store that people like, and sometimes love. That’s really nice. I love the character and I love the world. I don’t often times get to contribute to the story as much as I do with this project. Learning how to do that – learning how to collaborate with the writers, and with Chad, that’s been fun to explore. It’s great to have the voice to be able to do that.”

Keanu Reeves also discussed what he is most proud about when it comes to the John Wick franchise:

I would say it’s the blend of elements that it has. I think the way the action is and the world that’s created. I think the cinema of the series is really strong – you know, the framing, the the camera movement. I think the set design is really great. So, I think the film is really easy to watch. It’s beautiful.”

There’s a character that we root for, hopefully. He’s fighting for his life. They’re not insulting. The films are fun, but they’re smart. There’s humor, and action. Comedy. It has a unique tone, I think. So, you can tell I’m a fan. So, I would say those are the elements.”

Film News – Clark Gregg On Captain Marvel

Anyone would assume that, when Agent Coulson died in The Avengers, Clark Gregg would no longer be playing this character. However, he actually did get the opportunity to continue playing Agent Coulson in various Marvel properties.

For instance, Clark Gregg has had a prominent role in the superhero TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and, thanks to de-aging technology, he played a younger Agent Coulson in Captain Marvel, the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an interview with Collider, Clark Gregg had the opportunity to speak about Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel

Here is what Clark Gregg had to say about what it was like to work with de-aging technology for Captain Marvel:

There’s not much going on, on the day. You look like yourself with some dots and more hair, both of us. Hilarious thing was his dots were white and my dots were black, which I thought was very like ebony and ivory.”

Yet, that’s it. And we’re kind of looking at each other, grizzled veterans that we are, and going, ‘Oh, shit. We’re younger. We’re younger. I gotta remember to act that.’ So sometimes I’d kind of feel like I let a little old, grizzled, traumatized, beat up Phil Coulson slip into it, and I’d be like, ‘Wait, wait, whoa, whoa. Let me start over.’ Because this is a guy who isn’t even really sure what exactly he signed up for yet.”

He just knows that this guy Fury is cool, and he wants to learn from him I feel like it’s the moment when he’s realizing, ‘oh this is exactly where I’m supposed to be. This is my destiny, is to be part of this, and to work with this guy.’ That’s the process of this movie, which I think is a cool moment in anyone’s life.”

Film News – Kyle MacLachlan On Giant Little Ones

Giant Little Ones is a coming-of-age film that was recently released in a limited capacity in the United States. Kyle MacLachlan, who has a supporting role in the movie, recently gave an interview to Collider and spoke about Giant Little Ones.

Giant Little Ones

Kyle MacLachlan had this to say on what it was like to play such a compassionate and understanding father in Giant Little Ones:

I think all parents strive for some version of that with their children. I’m old and maybe a little naïve, but it’s something that I think is essential. You’ve been entrusted with the lives of your children, so parenting is not something you should take lightly.”

It’s a full-time job, and we’re here to guide and to help. That’s the way I look at it and my opinion, but you’re supposed to guide and help and encourage. It’s not discipline so much as it’s just trying to understand, and help them understand, why one choice may be better than the other.”

It’s more of a nudging, as opposed to a pushing and shoving into something. I’m taking my lessons from my father. He was a little more gentle in his approach. When it looked like I was heading into the acting profession, he was like, “Okay.” He recognized that it was something I loved and that I was actually good at.”

You always want the best for your kids. You want them to be able to support themselves and be in situations where they can thrive. He felt like that was happening with me, so I took that as my lesson. Then, along comes a role where that’s also part of the dad’s makeup, so it worked.”

Film News – Kevin Feige Discusses Guardians of the Galaxy 3 + Avengers: Endgame

Recently, Kevin Feige discussed Captain Marvel and, in the same interview with Collider, he had the chance to also speak about Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Avengers: Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be the first Guardians film without James Gunn as the director and Avengers: Endgame will be the superhero movie that ends Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Both films are important for the MCU for different reasons.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Kevin Feige said this about whether James Gunn’s script for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will actually be used:

Yes, we are. That’s as far as I’ll go in terms of anything past Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, in terms of what we’re doing when. Because as you know, we’ve wanted to focus on Captain Marvel, Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home. Finishing out these 23 MCU movies. We have a grand plan going forward. We want to talk about it after Endgame and Far From Home. But as we’ve already confirmed and said, it’s James’ draft.”

Avengers: Endgame

Kevin Feige also spoke about choosing Endgame as the title for Avengers 4 and keeping it a secret for such a long time:

Well, I think I’d said that it all had gotten blown out of proportion to some extent. But it was a spoiler, because if you knew before Infinity Warcame out that the next movie was called Endgame, then you know that there wasn’t an ending to Infinity War. But that had been the title of the movie from the moment we conceived of doing the two films. In large part, because…it’s seeded right there. I mean, it’s seeded in Ultron.”

Film News – Kevin Feige On Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel, the next instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is about to be released and it is one of the most anticipated movies of 2018 for a lot of film fans. This is particularly the case when you consider that it is going to heavily play into Avengers: Endgame. Fans of the MCU owe Kevin Feige a lot of gratitude for this superhero movie franchise and, in an interview with Collider, he spoke about Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel

Here is what Kevin Feige had to say about the use of de-aging technology in Captain Marvel and whether any discussions have taken place in regards to movies taking place in earlier decades like the 1960s and 1970s:

Well, this was the movie for a long time that, because of our experience with Hank Pym, as you know, with Tony Stark, making those characters younger in limited scenes.”

Peggy Carter, we did in the top of the first Ant-Man film. We said, ‘We think the technology has gone far enough that we can do an entire movie, that we can have a main character in an entire movie de-aged.’ It helped that the characters, as I said at the press conference, was Clark Gregg and Sam Jackson, because those two haven’t really aged like normal human beings over the past 20 years.”

But I think it was tremendous the way it worked in Captain Marvel, and yeah, I think looking for new ways to use it is fun. I think we used to believe, and I think it used to be true, that you really could only do it for a scene or two. But we got to the point in later stages of finishing this movie, where we forgot. Where we were just used to it.”

Film News – Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse Directors Discuss Franchise Future

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a worthy winner of Best Animated Film at the 2019 Oscars and a strong argument for this film deserving to receive a Best Picture nomination could absolutely be made.

The success of this animated superhero movie has left a lot of film fans craving for more films in this franchise. In an interview with Collider, the directors of Spider-Verse were given the chance to speak about the future of this franchise.

Spider-Verse Franchise

Here is what they had to say about the future of the Spider-Verse franchise and balancing familiarity and innovation:

RODNEY ROTHMAN: Yeah, it’s a tightrope […] I would say that the goal is to do … to deepen both sides of that equation, you know? To deepen the emotional storytelling, and you know, the story about Miles and his family, just deepen all that, and deepen the sense of experimentation and pushing boundaries visually, and I’m sure there’ll be tethers to what we just did, but I think the hope is that we feel super encouraged by how people responded to the risks that we took, we didn’t know if they were gonna work or not, so I think everyone feels emboldened.

BOB PERSICHETTI: Yeah, I think it becomes about, you know, continue the philosophy of the way the movie got made, as opposed to continue making movies that look the same. Because the way the movie – every choice we made, in pushing the boundaries on the animation style and the visual stylization, even the narrative stylization, all of that stuff was a choice that felt like it was born out of the needs for the story and the movie narratively, and obviously it all compounded to make something feel really cohesive and resonant. If you can take that philosophy forward, that’s the win.

Film News – Harry Shum Jr On Crazy Rich Asians Sequel

Crazy Rich Asians was a film released in 2018 that was highly celebrated by both film critics and general audiences. Due to its success from a critical and financial perspective, a sequel to this movie being given the green-light was never in doubt. Harry Shum Jr. was one of the stars of Crazy Rich Asians and, in an interview with Collider, he had the opportunity to speak about the Crazy Rich Asians 2.

Crazy Rich Asians 2

Here is what Harry Shum Jr. had to say on what he personally knows about Crazy Rich Asians 2:

Yeah, we’ve had small conversations on the idea of it. We had conversations, even before I did the movie. That character was designed to be a cameo, in the first film, because he didn’t want to muddy the waters with so much to explore.”

It was important to see Rachel and Nick’s story, and let that be the center of it. It was a gamble. He said, ‘Look, there’s a cameo. I can’t promise anything. If it does well, the idea is that we’ll explore that.’ So, from me being friends with him for a long time, I was like, ‘Yeah, of course.’ It’s such an incredible thing that the movie has done so well and has made a cultural stamp, even with just romantic comedy status.”

It’s a really meaningful film, and I know that they are looking to tell that story, as well, but there’s still some time before that happens. I know the character in the books, and that’s what excited me. The stuff that happens in the books can hopefully be carried over or adapted, so we’ll see.”

Film News – Kevin Feige Discusses Eternals

In the next two months, we will have the pleasure of watching both Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame in cinemas. These Marvel superhero films will close out Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and lay the foundation for Phase 4 of this comic book movie franchise.

One of the many MCU movies that will come out in Phase 4 is Eternals and, in an interview with Collider at a press day for Captain Marvel, Kevin Feige had the chance to talk about Eternals.

Eternals

Here is what Kevin Feige had to say on what the plan is for introducing a film like Eternals into the MCU and how the movie will heavily lean into the source material by Jack Kirby:

Everything after Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film. But seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do.”

But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians, much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them.”

Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people.”

You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

Film News – Javier Bardem On Everybody Knows + Dune

Recently, Stellan Skarsgard had the opportunity to speak about Dune, a remake of the 1980s film that will be directed by Denis Villeneuve. Now, fellow cast member Javier Bardem has given an interview to Collider and he spoke about Dune as well as a new movie he is starring in alongside his wife Penelope Cruz titled Everybody Knows.

Everybody Knows

Javier Bardem said this on what director Asghar Farhadi said to him when he was approached to star in Everybody Knows:

If you are religious and a believer, you light a candle and thank all of the virtues that you know the name of, for creating that miracle.”

If not, I just close my eyes and say out loud, ‘Fuck, am I lucky or what?!’ Many months ago, before I met him for the first time in Los Angeles, funny enough, because he was promoting A Separation and I was promoting something else, I saw A Separation at a movie theater and I couldn’t believe the quality of that movie, in every aspect.”

And I thought, ‘Jesus, if only I could learn Persian. If I knew Persian, I’d go to Iran and beg him for a job.’ Months later, he comes and says, ‘I wanna make a movie in Spanish. Are you interested?’ I was like, ‘What?!’ I couldn’t believe it. What a stroke of luck.”

So, the first thing is that you’re really grateful for the amazing luck you have and you think about what you did to earn it. And then, you ask, ‘If he gives me this chance, what can I give back? What does he need from me? I’ll give it all.’ And that’s what we did.”

We gave all of the time, focus, and help that he wanted and needed from us, in terms of language, preparation, and everything. And it was nothing more than one of the greatest personal acting experiences that I’ve ever had. It was excellent.”

Dune

This is what Javier Bardem had to say on the influence Denis Villeneuve had in his decision to be a part of Dune:

I saw the Dune from David Lynch. I’ve read the first two books. I saw Prisoners. I saw Sicario. I saw Arrival. I love Blade Runner [2049].”

And then, I met him and he asked me, if I’d ever be interested in being in Dune. It was like, ‘What?! Yes! Of course! Are you kidding?!’ Again, what a luxury. What a grace. What a blessing to have a job that you like, and not only that, but to be near people that you admire and that have inspired you, and that you really follow because you love what they do, and they ask you to be a part of that.”

It’s a luxury, in this life, that I can have. The only thing that I can give back is all of my will and all of my skills, if I have any.”
